ABSTRACT

Although these writings are of historical interest, they do not belong to history, but to the ever-present encounter between the antisocial elements in society and the forces of health and sanity which reach out to reclaim and recover what has been lost. The complexity of this encounter cannot be overestimated. The point of interaction between the care givers and the cared for is always the focus for therapy in this field or work, and it requires constant attention and support from the professional experts involved, and enlightened backing from the responsible administrators. Today, as always, the practical question is how to maintain an environment that is humane enough, and strong enough, to contain both the care givers and the deprived and delinquent who desperately need care and containment, but who will dn their best to destroy it when they find it.
