ABSTRACT
In summarizing the findings of our study of life after 90 we shall seek to show how far we have succeeded in realizing our main aims. These centred on the quality of life, beginning with state of health and material circumstances, including where and with whom the elderly individual was living, and going on to provide a broader view of such issues as leisure activities, questions of ‘morale’ and wellbeing (covering feelings of loneliness and boredom), the quality of relationships and the kind of support and care being received. Throughout, we wanted to describe the quality of life in terms of self-reports and self-perceptions. We also wanted to go beyond description, and to explore, where we could, the meanings underlying the relationship between subjective views and objective circumstances.
