If the Cold War emerged during the last phase of the struggle against Nazi Germany, it had roots which extended back to the second decade of the century. The confrontation of armed alliances was made more intense by the existence of profound and long-standing ideological differences. Trotsky had once personalized the gulf between Russia and the West by calling Lenin and Wilson ‘the apocalyptic antipodes of our time’.2
