ABSTRACT

From these materials the Poet has constructed a singularly pathetic and interesting tale, in which the mysterious Doe is introduced as having been the favourite of Emily in childhood and early youth; as recognizing her in the desolation of her grief among the wilds of Craven; as being her constant companion in her seclusion; and, finally, as the meek pilgrim of Nature, that returned on every Sabbath, to lie down, in simple homage by her grave.
