ABSTRACT

Understanding endurance training has become a very serious scientific endeavor. In the past twenty years, there has been an increase in our understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of exercise. There has also been an increase in interest in the mechanism of how exercise induces physiological and biochemical adaptation at the cellular and organ level and how this accounts for the improved performance of athletes in a given sport. In an oversimplified way, we can view exercise as a transient damage to the tissue that stimulates repair beyond the original level. In this context, a prolonged resting period between bouts of exercise is essential for full repair of muscle tissue.
