ABSTRACT

Some 153,000 children aged under sixteen in 1990 saw their parents divorce. The yearly numbers of these principal witnesses of parental dissolution had risen from some 82,000 in 1971 to 163,000 in 1978 and 1980. The doubling of numbers in the 1970s was a direct consequence of the divorce surge. As a result one in five of all fifteen-year-old children in 1980 had already experienced the divorce of their parents.
