ABSTRACT
With this SU we come to the end of the ‘lure’. The reason for this division here is, of course, because of its relationship to the next SU but also because SU 16 presents the major themes of affect and the vital S-level question. Beauty is in a situation in which she is only half made-up, materially secure but emotionally out of balance because of the loss of her father. My contention is that the story knows this too and will attempt to ‘fill up’ the other half in a way that suits it.
