ABSTRACT

Scott was relying totally on hearsay, as is all too apparent, but this casual comment from his article on ‘Romance’ in the Supplement to the 4th, 5th and 6th editions of the Encyclo pædia Britannica, Edinburgh and London 1824, vol. 6:435-56 (reprinted unaltered in his Essays on Chivalry, Romance, and the Drama, London 1824) does raise the question of Grendel’s equivocal status.
