ABSTRACT

Introduction In this part of the Reader, problems to do with the nature of crime and the identification of criminals are treated through the assessment of criminological theories. Each article addresses specific themes in the sociological or psychological literature on crime, with a view to highlighting the theoretical complementarity or antagonism between the various approaches. Consequently, this part is more expository and analytical than the ‘history’ section. These essays are specially written overviews rather than selections from existing detailed work.
