ABSTRACT

So far, this book has been concerned with individual positions in the labour market and individual career patterns, and with the pattern of gender segregation in both. This chapter looks at the relationship between labour market divisions and the family. There are three main issues: first, what was the role of the family in promoting and reproducing gender divisions in employment? Second, what were the effects of these divisions on the household economy, and third, what were its implications for class?
