ABSTRACT

We could forgive Lang’s predictably shallow dismissals of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Zola, in view of the predictably over-academic dismissals, by others nearer our time, of Dumas as himself shallow. Were Dumas himself predictable he would never have been popular, and there are signs that, in recent years, his work has been enjoying a revival.
