ABSTRACT
An essay on Burns, followed by two on Scott, prompts us to reiterate Lang’s point, made in his ‘The Ballads. Scottish and English’ (in Volume II of the present work), that it was Burns who drew on Scottish folk song, but Scott who focused on the Scottish ballads.
