ABSTRACT
The background to my argument lies in the debate concerning the nature of the subject in recent Continental philosophy and theory.1 It is a debate in which the avant-garde of theory has aimed to dislodge the notions of intention as predominant for interpretation, of the author as origin and authority, of the humanist subject as controlling the discourses a writer "u se s ," and of the presence of "character" within fiction.
