ABSTRACT
One way of beginning an inquiry into the nature of understanding is to
look at the ways in which the words ‘understand’ and ‘understanding’ are
used in everyday speech, the object being to see if it is possible to make
general comments about the notion which will serve to provide hints and
clues for educators in their role as teachers of understanding.
