ABSTRACT
Soil is of major importance to mankind because it supports the plants and animals that provide us with food, shelter and clothing. It is also of importance as the foundation material for the buildings in which we live. Because of these quite different reasons for the significance of soils, different concepts of soil have been developed by agriculturists on the one hand and engineers on the other.
