ABSTRACT
The last three chapters have examined China's Paracels operation and its handling of the dispute with Hanoi over both the Paracel and Spratly Islands during 1974-84. The major finding of these chapters is that China's behaviour was guided by a complex interplay between its long-standing objective of 'recovering' the islands and its leaders' perception of China's geopolitical interests.
