ABSTRACT
In the last chapter, it was pointed out that before the naval battle for the Paracels, North vietnam had appeared to recognize China's sovereignty over the Paracel and Spratly Islands. Such an attitude began to change right after the battle. (See later sections for further discussion.) In the following decade, Hanoi emerged as Beijing's major contender for sovereignty over the islands.
