Encouragingandfacilitatingthedevelopmentofreadinginyoung childreninvolvesparentsandteachersinmanyactivities.Readingto theyoungchildfromaselectionofworthwhilebooksandeventually readingwiththechildarelikelytobeamongthoseactivities.Inadditionasconfidenceisgainedtheroleasthereaderwillmorefrequently betakenoverbythechild.Insuchcircumstancestheadultwillguide andsupportthereader.Thustheadultwilllistentothereading,considerthemistakesormiscuesthatareproduced,andprovidesome comment,perhaps,tohelpthereaderwithanydifficulties.Theparent orteacherwillalsowanttotalkaboutthebook,onoccasions,before orafterthereading-orboth.Itisevident,therefore,thatwhenan adulthearsachildreadanumberofdecisionswillneedtobemade aboutthenatureoftheactivity.Thisbookseekstoexplorethe interactionandtoprovidesomeguidelinesforteacherstoconsiderin theirpractice.Theguidelineswhichweredevelopedfromworkcarriedoutinclassroomsmayalsohelptheparentswhowishtoreflect upontheirroleastheylistentotheirchildrenreading.
