ABSTRACT

However, confidence that the problem of distress due to ASR in concrete may not exist in India has been somewhat thwarted by the report of two concrete irrigation structures in which distress during a service life of nearly 30 years has now been attributed to ASR1. These, coupled with similar cases in some other concrete dams or bridge substructures (which have not been fully investigated) and reports of occurrence of ASR in neighbouring Pakistan, have focused considerable attention on the problem. As a result, aggregates and cementing materials for most of the new dam projects are being exhaustively evaluated, and research has begun

on the choice of appropriate cementing systems and rehabilitation techniques. This chapter describes the contemporary experience of these aspects in India.
