ThelastquestionIshalldealwithhereiswhatcouldexplainthedomain conditionsweobserved,i.e.whyshoulddifferentsemanticinterpretation rulesobeytheseparticularsyntacticconditions.Obviously,byposing thisquestionwegobeyondtherelativelydefendablegroundsoftesting thecorrespondenceofalinguistictheorytolinguisticfactsintoa'much deeper,andhencemuchmorerarelyattainablelevel-thatofexplanatoryadequacy...'{Chomsky,1965,p.27).Nevertheless,wemay attempttoseewhatananswermightlooklikewithintheframeworkI havebeenassuminghere,andmoregenerally,withinthepictureofnatural languageproposedbyChomsky(e.g.,1965,1975).
