3.1 INTRODUCTION

The main objective of this chapter is to provide general information on the basic procedures used in the processing of samples for DNA profiling. The main topics covered are: sample preservation, extraction of DNA from evidentiary material, estimation of the integrity and amount of DNA, and effect of environment on recovered DNA. The final part of this chapter gives a general outline of the procedures utilized for the fractionation and analysis of extracted DNA.
