ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the relationships between the behaviour policy, school climate and communication, and how each connects to behaviour. A behaviour policy is a statement of aims, values and principles. It provides operational guidance on putting these aims into action. School effectiveness and school improvement have taken centre stage in educational debates over the last 30 years. Much energy is being directed towards increasing school accountability and finding ways to enhance quality control and economic efficiency. Gaining a pupil perspective on school effectiveness and improvement has increasingly been recognised as a potentially valuable contribution. Gray identified two simple indicators in addition to academic performance which require attention to pupils' perspectives: pupil satisfaction and pupil-teacher relationships. Within a school, communication is multifaceted, and it is important to match the type of communication to the issue in focus. Much communication in schools is by word of mouth or informal notes.
