ABSTRACT

This book has been concerned to chart the ways in which seven localities have been able to respond to the tremendous economic, social and political changes that have swept through Britain in the past couple of decades. We have described a variety of policies pursued in these localities, which range from some of the most deprived places (Liverpool, Middlesbrough) to some of the most prosperous (Cheltenham, Swindon). In each case it has been shown that the emergence, implementation and effectiveness of local policies depends upon the complex of economic, social and political conditions found within and beyond a given locality.
