Introduction

Since the mid-1970s, civil society has been the subject of more and more research in political economy. As researchers have become interested in the analysis of civil society, so their research has had increasingly important effects on the direction that the political-economy approach has taken: it has lead to some important theoretical adjustments; it has meant a widening of what is included within the approach; and it has meant some quite substantial changes in methodology.
