ABSTRACT
The proportion of people directly engaged in agriculture worldwide is dropping rapidly: in developing countries, from 70 percent in 1970 to 50 percent in 1990; in developed countries over the same period, from 16 percent to 8 percent. Meanwhile the number of people that each hectare of land must support is increasing dramatically. The amount of land available is relatively fixed, while the world’s population is growing.
