ABSTRACT

Despite the rapid growth of commercially available instructional materials, language teachers of less commonly taught languages often still struggle to find appropriate language teaching resources. Most language software programs currently available on the market are expensive and little or no provision exists for instructors to customize the content. To develop their own technology-enhanced language learning materials, instructors have at their disposal a wide variety of development tools, which differ in terms of level of difficulty and cost. User-friendly authoring systems offer a budget-priced means of enabling Arabic language instructors with even limited computer skills to produce different types of interactive Web-based exercises that fulfill pedagogical and instructional design principles. These products can easily be tailored to a variety of different contexts and proficiency levels by changing the language content and providing language learners with additional practice and review in a controlled environment. The interactive Web-based exercises created with authoring systems also provide the instructor with the opportunity to integrate various skills (e.g., listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture) and, at the same, time integrate technology more fully into the language learning process. 1
