ABSTRACT

Of all the countries of the now-developed world, it is arguably in France that the topic of migration has figured most prominently in political consciousness. In part this is a reflection of the general awareness of the French about matters demographic, but in France concern with population questions has, from time to time, gone much further than elsewhere to embrace internal migration. Political concerns in recent years over international migration are, on the other hand, shared with many other European countries (White 1986).
