ABSTRACT

On March 19, 2011, an international ‘coalition of the willing’ embarked on a military intervention in Libya. The aim of the intervention was to implement United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973 calling for the use of ‘all necessary means’ to protect civilians and civilian-populated areas from attack. The coalition imposed a no-fly zone over northern Libya and stroke against armoured units as well as Libyan air defence systems. On March 31, 2011, NATO took full command of operations.
