ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the unfolding debates and emerging issues and the way in which these debates and issues are impacting upon the practice of public relations. It also traces some of the complexities of information privacy and regulation, beginning with an analysis of the underlying power relations. In light of more recent events, including the Edward Snowden case discussed below, it is worth considering this extract from Clinton's speech: In her speech, Clinton emphasizes the open-ended nature of Internet technology, which can be used for multiple, sometimes conflicting, purposes. This chapter has also considered the Edward Snowden case at some length, due to its importance in shaping our thinking about privacy on the Internet. It also primarily looked at privacy and regulation in digital and social media contexts from national and international perspectives. The chapter also considers the three different user perspectives; that of individuals, groups, and organizations.
