ABSTRACT
During the last several years, research at our laboratory has been focused on understanding how schizophrenics encode and store verbal materials in memory and eventually retrieve them for adaptive use in a variety of tasks. It has been assumed that, if memory is an essential component of higher mental operations, the commonly observed schizophrenic dysfunctions in language and thought may be a reflection of more basic deficits in the memory system.
