ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the physical sound-space of the studio. After introducing some basic principles of the acoustic design of recording studios, in particular the materiality and size of recording spaces, the chapter discusses how the sound-space of the recording studio can on the one hand be a set of fragmented, isolated audioscapes, and on the other a shared, exciting and creative soundscape, depending on the approach that is taken to recording. The chapter also considers how the studio sound-space is “coded” by producers and engineers to create particular sounds and, in particular, the importance of microphone selection and placement for recording.
