ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the basic framework of an Environmental Management System (EMS) to assist its design and implementation into an organization. It provides an outline of a basic EMS based on ISO 14001 international standard and an implementation process to enable an organization to provide a foundation system to manage its environmental risk at the basic compliant level. However, the key to successful environmental management improvement is constant monitoring and measurement of the effectiveness of the EMS and reviewing and updating the corporate environmental plan. The scope of the aspects and impacts analysis is required to cover all business activities, products and services over which an organization has direct control and can influence change. If the organization is to achieve continual environmental improvement, the environmental plan needs to be reviewed and examined regularly. New products, or products that the organization is attempting to reposition environmentally, may require a higher environmental management budget commitment than others.
