ABSTRACT

Goals in supervision include both long term (e.g., help the trainee become a competent therapist and an ethical professional) and short term (e.g., create a safe space for exploring potentially difficult topics; help the trainee develop basic interviewing skills). Some are general across all or most relational therapies; others are unique to a particular trainee, supervisor, or training setting. Therefore, it is important that readers revisit this chapter after developing and articulating a personal philosophy of supervision that includes clear roles and goals. Those roles and goals will guide the development of screening and evaluating devices and procedures. In addition, as you evaluate trainee competence and the process of supervision, your goals and evaluating ideas are likely to change recursively.
