ABSTRACT

As digital culture permeates every facet of our life, it deserves to be studied not merely as a large set of new forms of communication, but because every novel form of interaction redefines those who make use of it. In order to appreciate this new identity in a critical manner, systems heuristics may be usefully applied. Systems heuristics in their various incarnations remain steadfastly antireductionist: they depict various limitations to approaches to complex problems that (merely) break them into their elementary components. Applying them to the investigation of digital culture will enrich both our knowledge of systems and attempts to appraise the impact of digital culture on our economic life and political future.
