ABSTRACT

This paper is presented in the form of a metalogue, based on two (Skype) conversations between Nora Bateson and Phillip Guddemi about Gregory Bateson’s participation with systems theory and cybernetics and the implications of his approach. Nora Bateson is best known for making the film An Ecology of Mind, which is a personal approach to the ideas of her father Gregory Bateson. Phillip Guddemi is an anthropologist who was Gregory Bateson’s student as an undergraduate and who later did fieldwork in the province of Papua New Guinea where Gregory Bateson had worked; he is now president of the Bateson Idea Group, a nonprofit organization dedicated to Gregory Bateson’s ideas and legacy. 1
