ABSTRACT

TAX RESISTANCE AND THE COMING OF THE TEXAS REVOLUTION Texas has always been and today remains one of the lowest of the low tax states. In fact, like the United States, Texas as born in a tax revolt. British attempts to tax stamps, tea, and other imported goods sparked resistance behind the cry, “no taxation without representation.” The Texas revolution was sparked by Mexican authority’s attempts to tax imports into Texas. Adding to the interest in this fi rst Texas tax revolt is the fact that it was led by Jim Bowie and William B. Travis, later to be co-commanders at the Alamo.
