ABSTRACT
HOUSTON MAYOR ANNISE PARKER Texas is a red state, with conservative, Anglo, male leaders in the most visible leadership roles. Rick Perry has been governor since late 2000, David Dewhurst has been lieutenant governor since 2003, John Cornyn has been U.S. senator since 2003, and Ted Cruz took a seat in the U.S. Senate in 2013. All are boots-with-suits Anglo conservatives in the Texas tradition. Cruz is Cuban-American, so the Texas tradition is expanding a bit, but not nearly as dramatically as it is expanding at the local level.
