ABSTRACT

Bands playing smaller venues can usually get away with a sound system with a less extended bass response, as the PAs main role will be amplifying vocals and perhaps reinforcing instruments such as guitar and keyboards. Separate subwoofers are being used to allow larger PA systems to handle full-range audio material at high levels. At the small-scale end of the market, there are compact systems that use separate woofer rather than a true subwoofer. In such systems the purpose of the woofer is to extend the range of a pair of fairly small satellite speakers. Some solo artists and duos may be able to manage without having a traditional PA at all, as most acoustic-guitar combo amplifiers have a separate microphone input allowing them to function as a complete mini PA amplification system in their own right. Mini line arrays are becoming increasingly fashionable, typically employing multiple small cone drivers mounted in a narrow, lightweight enclosure.
