ABSTRACT

Because we have organized Development in Infancy topically, we have devoted separate chapters to each of the major substantive aspects of development in infancy. Organizing the material in this way, however, may obscure the coherence of development across domains. In this final chapter, therefore, we use the development of social cognition (social understanding) in infancy to illustrate relations among different aspects of development. We do so by recalling details presented earlier and integrating them with new research on social cognition to create a broader, comprehensive perspective on infancy.
