ABSTRACT

Having officially opened their new garden at the beginning of May, the staff and children were thoroughly enjoying using it during the summer term. However, after a few weeks it became apparent that some features were not being used in the way that was originally intended and others were not being used much at all.The staff decided to spend time reviewing the children’s use of the garden and this review highlighted the following issues:

● the bark pit was rarely used; ● the digging pit was so popular that staff and

parents were having trouble keeping up with the laundering of muddy clothes;

● children were using the shingle path as a source of transportable materials for their trucks, and the presence of shingle all over the grass was making it hard to cut;

● the storage and retrieval of wellies was disorganised – staff and children were spending too long looking for a matching pair.
