ABSTRACT
When reporting statements that originally used the past tense, not a backshift of tenses (as in English), but a change of tenses would be necessary – and this again regardless of the tense of the reporting verb that starts the sentence. Persian has some straightforward and easy rules here; some of the tenses used have been developed specifically for this function and are used in indirect speech only.
