The eight-apple box is also called a pancake. The nickname for the apple box is the man-maker (kind of an inside joke, as it will make a person taller). Apple boxes are usually made of a strong wood that is glued or nailed together. In the center of the better-built boxes is a stiffener or center support that enables the boxes to withstand a heavy load.
