ABSTRACT

Your body language speaks volumes and can convey a message without a word from you. Two effective uses of body language are the “silent treatment” and the “teacher look.” To get a student’s attention, stop speaking and whatever you are doing in that moment to look straight at the student who is being disruptive. Do not waiver, even if it takes a few moments for the student to realize that all attention is focused his or her way. Once the student glances your way, simply shake your head a bit to communicate that his or her actions are inappropriate. Then, without words spoken, you and the class can calmly return to the task at hand.
