ABSTRACT

Call-outs are disruptive to a lesson. To prevent them, first examine why they are happening. Are you inadvertently promoting them? If you accept a call-out, then you have reinforced them and they will continue to occur. Many teachers don’t realize they are accepting call-outs because once in the flow of the lesson, they do not notice. During a lesson, stop and ask yourself, “Was that a call-out”? If it was, then ignore the student, model the raised hand sign, and call on a student whose hand is raised.
