ABSTRACT

Thai Buddhism preserves and propagates many vital features of Theravāda Buddhism. These include traditions of forest monks, mindfulness meditation practices, and in-depth phenomenological analysis of the Buddhist Abhidhamma. Generally, Thai horror films have focused instead on the sensational aspects of popular Buddhism associated with superstitions in the country. Nang Nak (Nonzee Nimibutr, Thailand, 1999) and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Thailand, 2010) represent two treatments of these aspects.
