ABSTRACT

STEP 1 BASIC SKETCH I find doing tons of preparatory sketches very

painful. Renoir did not spend a lot of time

doing complicated underdrawings either,

which may have been how he retained such

freshness in his finished paintings. To sketch,

Renoir would often use a fine soft sable

brush and raw Sienna thinned with

turpentine. Before I began my painting

I sketched out my drawing using similar thin

washes of paint. Here’s how:

1. In Painter, create a New Document (File/New) and set the canvas size.
