but was opposed to a formulaic approach.
He was especially against using a grid to
“square up” a drawing to scale. He felt that
sucked the life of out each line, as the lines
only had meaning in relationship to the size
of the paper. Instead, he did hundreds of
preliminary drawings until he felt he had
found the form and simplified his painting.
