ABSTRACT

In the Great War (World War I) Europeans employed the advanced technology of modern warfare to kill one another in new ways and in previously unimaginable numbers. After avoiding direct involvement for nearly three years, the United States intervened and helped bring the war to an end. Intervention in World War I strained and divided American society, sowing disillusionment following the collapse of President Woodrow Wilson’s wartime diplomacy. Nonetheless, the United States emerged from the war with the world’s strongest economy and unprecedented global influence.
