Research challenges loom large: crime is a sensitive topic under the current one-party system of the Chinese state and the Chinese government exerts graduated controls over much research activity. Gaining access and official support is central for any kind of collaborative endeavor. In addition, any collaborative endeavor will require a delicate balance of flexibility and compromise, and indeed any such work needs substantial time to build trust and goodwill. Contributors’ reflections on “doing research” in and on China cluster on two aspects: varying concerns around applicability and generalizability of Western concepts and theories, and examining unique measures that reflect characteristics of the Chinese context.
