ABSTRACT

I don't remember much of what we did during the days, that month. Oh, there were a couple of walks along the lakefront; and Stephanie took me to the Art Institute and the zoo, she filled in a few of the major gaps in my cultural heritage by playing some of her records for me: Marne, Godspell, Gypsy, Candide, and, most importantly, Pacific Overtures. I didn't instantly fall in love with that one (I don't think anyone does), but ultimately, it's had as much influence on my life as any musical I've heard since. Okay, I'd already heard "Send in the Clowns" about a million times in the previous year, as had everyone in the country, but aside from that, I think Pacific Overtures was my first Sondheim. That's a crucial turning point in anyone's cultural education.
